With summer upon us, many people are heading to the great outdoors to enjoy camping trips. While we want everyone to have fun, it’s important to know the risks when camping and how to stay safe outside.
• Never leave a fire unattended.
• Fully extinguish fires before sleeping or leaving.
• Store food in sealed containers away from your tent (preferably in bear-proof lockers or hung from a tree).
• Never feed wild animals.
• Keep a safe distance from all wildlife.
• Bring a map, compass, and/or GPS—and know how to use them.
• Carry a fully charged phone or satellite communicator if in remote areas.
• Set up camp on flat, elevated ground to avoid flooding.
• Ventilate tents to reduce condensation and prevent CO₂ buildup from stoves.
• Check weather forecasts before your trip.
• Pack appropriate clothing for sudden changes in temperature.
• Carry a well-stocked first aid kit.
• Know basic first aid for cuts, sprains, and insect bites.
• Wear long sleeves and pants to deter ticks and mosquitoes.
