Those in the construction field — owners, general contractors, and subcontractors — know that having a safety presence on project sites is a crucial factor to protect the team and should include a contractor safety management plan. However, creating a contractor safety management plan must include participation from everyone.

Construction Owners

As an owner, having a robust contractor safety management system is a must to protect one’s property and image. If the owner has multiple project sites, implementing a consistent safety plan for every location is the first step to protecting that image.

Owners can implement a consistent safety plan by:

  • Writing clear policies and making them available to all employees
  • Enforcing site policies through full-time safety managers
  • Having regular inspections of the project sites to make sure all rules and regulations are being followed

General Contractors

General contractors can also help implement a consistent safety system on their project sites. They can do so by completing regular inspections and working closely with full-time safety managers. These inspections should focus on:

  • Monitoring subcontractors and ensuring that all safety regulations are being met
  • Monitoring site conditions
  • Ensuring that all equipment, including personal protective equipment, is being used properly

Subcontractors

It’s important for general contractors to help implement a robust safety program. However, subcontractors are responsible for maintaining safe work conditions and following the site safety program. Hiring a full-time project safety manager has its benefits by:

  • Enforcing safety regulations
  • Writing Job Safety Analyses (JSAs)
  • Performing safety trainings
  • Leading daily toolbox talks for workers
  • Ensuring that safety is at the forefront of every project
