Happy Halloween! We hope that everyone has a fun — and most importantly — safe holiday! Below are some helpful tips so that people of all ages can safely enjoy the magic of Halloween.
Trick or Treating Safety Tips:
- Bring a flashlight, even if it isn’t dark when you start trick-or-treating
- Be aware of tripping hazards with costumes
- Ensure that all costumes are fire resistant
- Make sure masks do not obscure vision and children are able to breathe through them — you can also opt for nontoxic makeup instead of masks
- Children should be reminded to look both ways before crossing the street
- Remind children not to go inside any homes and to always stick with a buddy
- Older children who are out without supervision should carry their own flashlights. They should also agree to an acceptable route and a specific time to return home
- Check all candy and items received by kids. Ensure all candy is in its original wrapper and throw away any loose or unwrapped candy
National Safety Council (NSC) also offers these safety tips for motorists:
- Watch for children walking or running on roadways, medians, and curbs
- Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully
- At twilight, and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing
- Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween
