The American Burn Association (ABA) sponsors National Burn Awareness Week from February 4 – 10, 2024. This year’s theme, “Flammable Liquid Burns,” works to educate people about injuries that can result from the use of gasoline, kerosene, oil, and aerosol, as well as associated appliances and machinery. National Burn Awareness Week is a window of opportunity for organizations to mobilize burn, fire, and life safety educators to unite in sharing a common burn awareness and prevention message in our communities.

Follow these tips from ABA to stay safe from flammable liquid burns:

  • When purchasing a gas can, be sure it has a fuel arrestor on the can to prevent flashback
  • Never use an accelerant such as gasoline, kerosene, or aerosol sprays to start a camp fire
  • Fuel snow blowers, lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and weed eaters when the engines are cool and in an open area outdoors
  • Gasoline is an extremely flammable liquid and vapr — the fumes are of ignition up to 12 feet from a pooled source. Use caution when pumping gasoline
  • All flammable liquid containers should be kept in cool, dry locations and stored away from the home
  • Grills and gas ranges produce a lot of heat; keep your cooking area clear when around an open flame
  • Cooking oil is highly flammable. Closely monitor any cooking oil when frying

The American Burn Association strives to bring awareness to the causes of flammable liquid burns listed above. These are devastating and costly injuries and ABA encourages everyone to make simple environmental and behavioral changes that can save lives.
