NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCTOBER 9-15

October 10, 2022

2022 marks the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, which is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The NFPA wants to make this milestone count by saving as many lives as possible from tragic fires. This year’s campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape,” works to educate people of all ages about fire safety and how fast fire can move. Today’s homes burn extremely fast. From the time the smoke alarm goes off, you may only have two minutes (or less) to get out of your home safely. This is why it’s crucial to plan ahead.

Fire safety education may just seem like it’s for children, but it’s something that affects everyone. Fire Prevention Week is an ideal time for every member of the community to take the time to make sure that they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.

The NFPA provides resources that can help you prepare in the event of a fire. For more information and fire safety tools, including safety plans, activities for kids, and videos, visit https://www.nfpa.org/fpw

Since 1922, the NFPA has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and lasted over 24 hours, causing devastating damage.
