From June 1 – 10, National Safety Month kicks off by focusing on Emergency Preparedness. The first week of June is also National CPR and AED Awareness Week. When an emergency arises, knowing CPR and how to use an AED can save lives.

The National Safety Council (NSC) offers resources to help people stay safe around the clock. The resources include:

  • Family Fire Escape Plan template
  • Fire Safety in High-Rise Buildings
  • Lights Out. Now What?
  • Are You Ready for a Disaster?
  • Emergency Supplies for Your Home and Vehicle

The NSC also offer fact sheets and statistics about fire-related fatalities and injuries; drug overdoses; and weather-related deaths and injuries. Below are some of those alarming statistics.

  • In 2021, 1,353,500 fires resulted in 3,800 civilian deaths and 14,700 injuries. The National Fire Protection Association estimates that in the U.S. one home fire-related injury occurs every 47 minutes
  • The number of preventable deaths in the United States increased 11.9% in 2021 to 224,935, an all-time high. A 17.6% increase in drug overdose deaths helped drive this record high. A total of 98,268 people died from drug overdoses in 2021, also an all-time high
  • In 2021, 61,105 weather events resulted in 974 deaths and 1,667 injuries. Winter weather, heat, and floods were responsible for the most deaths during 2021
