The second week of National Safety Month runs from June 11 to the 17th and focuses on preventing slips, trips, and falls both at work and at home.

Slips, trips, and falls may seem minor at first thought but can cause life-changing injuries. The lifetime odds of dying in a fall is 1 in 98, so it’s vital to take steps to prevent these injuries.

The NSC offers resources on staying safe from slips, trips, and falls. Their resources include:

  • Older Adult Fall Safety checklist
  • Keep Older Adults Safe From Falls
  • 7 Tips for Safe Use of Ladder
  • Use Scaffolding Safely
  • Construction Safety: Prevent Falls Through Skylights and Other Openings
  • Reducing Slips, Trips, and Falls

Below are the latest statistics on slips, trips, and falls from NSC’s injury facts.

  • Falls to a lower level is the third leading fatal workplace event and the fifth leading event resulting in cases with days away from work. In 2021, 680 workers died and in 2020, 49,250 were injured from these types of falls
  • Falls on the same level is the third leading preventable workplace injury or illness event resulting in cases with days away from work. In 2020, 136 workers died and 127,680 were injured from these types of falls
  • In 2020, 36,508 older adults aged 65 and older died from preventable falls, and over 2.8 million were treated in emergency departments. Over the past 10 years, the number of older adult death from falls has increased 59%, while emergency department visits have increased 19%

The National Safety Council (NSC) is having a webinar on June 15 at 1:00 pm EST titled, “Workplace Safety Summit: Insights and Actions to Prevent the Most Common Injury on the Job.” Their upcoming summit is timed to the one-year anniversary of the Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) Pledge debut, which invites companies and organizations to protect their most valuable assets — their workers. The pledge is designed to celebrate this incredible progress while discussing the future of work, emerging MSD research, insights gained, and what this means for organizations of all sizes looking to advance their safety journey and mitigate MSD risk.
