October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, the vital role of substance abuse prevention for individual health and to remember those who have lost their lives to substance abuse. The Office of National Drug Control Policy encourages prevention efforts this month and all year long to help those suffering with substance abuse. It is also a time to acknowledge those in recovery, as well as children, parents, family, and friends supporting them.

Millions of Americans suffer from substance abuse, which includes underage drinking, alcohol dependency, non-medical use of prescription drugs, abuse of over-the-counter medications, and illicit drug use. Those with demanding jobs, such as workers in the construction field, are more susceptible to substance abuse issues. The stress of the job can lead to excessive drinking and drug use.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 2 out of 3 adults with a mental health issue consider themselves to be recovering or in recovery, while 7 out of 10 adults with a substance use disorder consider themselves to be recovering or in recovery.
