Using personal protective equipment (PPE) effectively is crucial for ensuring safety on construction projects. Below are steps to follow:

  • Assessment of Hazards: Before using PPE, assess the hazards present in your environment. Identify what types of risks you may encounter to determine the appropriate PPE needed
  • Select the Right PPE: Choose the correct type of PPE for the hazards present. This could include items such as gloves, goggles, helmets, respirators, masks, earplugs, etc. Ensure that the PPE meets safety standards and regulations
  • Proper Fit: Ensure that the PPE fits properly. Ill-fitting PPE can be uncomfortable and may not provide adequate protection. Follow manufacturer guidelines for sizing and adjustment
  • Training and Education: Train employees or users on the proper use of PPE. This includes how to wear, adjust, remove, and dispose of PPE correctly. Make sure they understand why PPE is necessary and how it protects them
  • Regular Inspection: Inspect PPE regularly for damage, wear, and tear. Replace any damaged or worn-out equipment promptly to maintain its effectiveness
  • Storage and Maintenance: Store PPE properly when not in use to prevent damage or contamination. Follow manufacturer instructions for cleaning and maintenance to ensure continued effectiveness
  • When putting on PPE:
    • Wash hands thoroughly before handling PPE
    • Put on PPE in the correct order, starting with items such as gloves, followed by goggles/face shields, masks/respirators, andfinally, any outer garments like gowns or coveralls
  • When removing PPE:
    • Remove PPE carefully to avoid contamination
    • Remove gloves first, taking care not to touch the outer surface with bare hands.Remove other PPE in the reverse order of whenyou put it on
    • Dispose of single-use PPE properly, and if reusable, clean and disinfect according to guidelines
    • Wash hands thoroughly after removing PPE
