Trenching fatalities increased at an alarming rate during the first half of 2022, surpassing last year's total by 68%. During the first six months of this year, 22 workers have fallen victim to the deadly hazards present in trenching and excavation work.
In response to the tragic rise in trench-related fatalities, Assistant Secretary of Labor Doug Parker is taking more extreme measures to hold employers and other responsible parties accountable when their failure to follow required safety practices puts workers' lives at risk.
To stress the dangers of disregarding federal workplace safety requirements for trenching and excavation work, OSHA enforcement staff will consider every available tool at the agency’s disposal.
