Women in Construction Week | Spotlight on Cassandra Prince

March 9, 2023

Safety Professional Cassandra Prince started her career in construction in 2011. Before joining HazTek in 2017, she had worked on nuclear power plant projects and various high voltage substation projects throughout New Jersey. Cassandra’s prior work experience was challenging because she was often the only woman — or the only African American — on many of the work sites. These experiences taught her the importance of trust and respect amongst colleagues, as well as to have a thick skin. Cassandra also learned to take every opportunity to further her education in the construction safety field, so that she could become a mentor to fellow women in the construction industry.

Cassandra’s passion for safety started when she was only nine years old. Her grandfather owned a construction company, where she spent a lot of her time. At her grandfather’s company, she learned how to pour and form concrete sidewalks and steps, drive dump trucks, and lay street pavers.

Since joining HazTek, Cassandra says that she’s never felt like “just another employee.” She has met great mentors here — colleagues who support and encourage her to be the best in everything that she does. She is taking their advice by pursuing her CHST and SMS certifications, and her second Train the Trainer certification in General industry. Cassandra’s advice for new Safety Professionals is to “be yourself, learn something new every day, have compassion for others, and lead by example.”

Thank you to Cassandra for paving the way for future females in the industry and for the experience she brings to our organization.

In honor of Women in Construction Week, HazTek is featuring several of our safety professionals who work out in the field.

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) created Women in Construction (WIC) Week to highlight women as a viable component of the construction industry and as an occasion for the thousands of NAWIC members across the country to help raise awareness of the growing role of women in the construction industry and the opportunities available to them.
