HazTek Safety Professional Kit Flores had some great mentors when she started her safety career in the late 1990s — they made sure that she had substantial training in safety standards as well as a good background in labor law and human resources since they all come into play with safety.

Kit first started with HazTek in 2017. She has had the opportunity to work with some very high-profile companies in multiple states from coast to coast. Having worked in many aspects of construction safety, Kit notes that curiosity, perseverance, and compassion have all been themes that have repeated throughout her experience. She enjoys learning from the various people that she meets, from craftpersons to those in management with specialty skills. Kit says, “No day is like the day before and there are always opportunities to coach and draw out the best in individuals and groups to achieve their goals. This last year has been especially challenging for all of construction’s ‘essential workers’ who have been balancing their personal concerns and experiences with coming to work and staying focused on safety, quality, and production.” Working in construction has enabled Kit to hear hundreds of people’s stories and see — and be a part of — the jobsite “family” supporting and encouraging one another. Kit says, “It has been an honor to work alongside such an amazing group of people.”

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) created Women in Construction (WIC) Week to highlight women as a viable component of the construction industry and as an occasion for the thousands of NAWIC members across the country to help raise awareness of the growing role of women in the construction industry and the opportunities available to them.
